The agreement came into force on January 1, 1994, and superseded the 1988 Canada–United States Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Canada. The North American Free Trade Agreement was an agreement signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States that created a trilateral trade bloc in North America. continue to participate in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)? Opponents also point out that history has shown that dominance in technology is a revolving door and that many companies (including IBM in the 1980’s) have cycled through it with little to no help from the government. Opponents argue that these companies have benefited consumers by providing free online tools and bring more competition into commerce. Senator Warren argues that the companies have “bulldozed competition, used our private information for profit, and tilted the playing field against everyone else.” Lawmakers in the European Union proposed a set of rules which include a blacklist of unfair trading practices, requirements that companies set up an internal system to handle complaints and allow businesses to group together to sue platforms. government should designate tech companies who have global revenue of over $25 billion as “platform utilities" and break them up into smaller companies. Democratic Presidential Candidate Elizabeth Warren issued proposals that would regulate Facebook, Google and Amazon. Should the government break up Amazon, Facebook and Google? The passage of the Contract with America Advancement Act of 1996 further narrowed the number of people allowed to receive SSI disability benefits by requiring that drug addiction or alcoholism not be a material factor in their disability. Another significant change was the complete exclusion of legal aliens from receiving any SSI benefits. The law stated that federal funds may only be used to provide a total of five years of aid in a lifetime of a family. The new law placed permanent ceilings on the amount of federal funding for welfare, and gave each state a block grant of money to help run its welfare program. In 1996, Congress passed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (Welfare Reform Act). Similar benefits are sometimes provided by the private sector either through policy mandates or on a voluntary basis. Federal and state social programs include cash assistance, health insurance, food assistance, housing subsidies, energy and utilities subsidies, and education and childcare assistance. are designed to ensure that the basic needs of the American population are met. Should there be fewer or more restrictions on current welfare benefits? Opponents argue that a UBI would be detrimental to economies by encouraging people to either work less or drop out of the workforce entirely. Proponents of UBI argue that it will reduce or eliminate poverty by providing everyone with a basic income to cover housing and food. In the Alaska Permanent Fund each individual and family receives a monthly sum that is funded by dividends from the state’s oil revenues. The longest running UBI system in the world is the Alaska Permanent Fund in the U.S. Several countries, including Finland, India and Brazil, have experimented with a UBI system but have not implemented a permanent program. The funding for Universal Basic Income comes from taxation and government owned entities including income from endowments, real estate and natural resources. Do you support a universal basic income program?Ī Universal Basic Income program is social security program where all citizens of a country receive a regular, unconditional sum of money from the government. The empathy loop has three steps: (1) You inquire about a subject or issue (2) the other side responds and (3) You demonstrate your understanding of the response, and test or check that understanding with the other person. How do you go about demonstrating that you are trying to understand? Use a technique we call the empathy loop. As Professor Mnookin describes the process in his book on negotiating, Beyond Winning: In mediation circles, mirroring is often referred to as looping. The process repeats itself until the speaker confirms the listener got it right. It reflects a genuine attempt by the listener to understand the speaker’s point of view using statements like, “if I heard you correctly, you said that you don’t like it when I glance at my iPhone while you are speaking to me.”įollowing mirroring, the speaker confirms if the listener accurately conveyed the speaker’s perspective if not, the speaker identifies what aspect of her message was missing or misunderstood, and the listener tries again based on the speaker’s feedback. In marital therapy, mirroring entails the listening spouse repeating back in their own words the content of a message just delivered by the speaking spouse. At the core of the Imago method is what is known as the Couple’s Dialogue**, which consists of three distinct conversational processes: mirroring, validation and empathy. Harville Hendrix and Helen Hunt that seeks to transform conflict between couples into opportunities for healing and growth through improved communication. Among these is the Imago Couples Dialogue.įor those unfamiliar with Imago, it is a school of marital counseling developed by Drs. The good news is there are established methods mediators can use to bring rigor to the process of communicating about feelings. Given that reality, what techniques can a mediator employ to address the complex emotions at the heart of many disputes? Unlike the largely mechanical approaches such as decision tree analysis used to value the economics of a dispute, unpacking the parties’ emotions feels more like art than science. To paraphrase mediator Julie Denny *, the chief executive of a manufacturer is not just angry because the company lost money due to defective parts she also feels betrayed because a longstanding supplier whom she trusted cut corners at her expense.Ī discharged employee asserting a claim for age discrimination is not just upset because he has lost his livelihood he also feels humiliated by the way his bosses treated him.Ī sister not only resents that she received a smaller equity interest in the family business than she feels she deserved she also resents the lack of appreciation shown by her siblings for all the time she invested caring for their parents after they retired.Īs we have previously discussed, ignoring the emotional component in a dispute can lead to impasse. Nearly all disputes in mediation have both a financial and an emotional component. Childnet are also part of the UK Safer Internet Centre and organise Safer Internet Day in the UK every February. It can even be gaining a sense of scale of the universe in a game like Everything.īeing able to discern between reliable sources and unreliable sources of information is an important skill for children to develop. It can be the way different elements combine properties in games like Zelda Breath of the Wild. It can be the embodied understanding of gravity and momentum in real-time physics games like Portal. This can be the simple chemical puzzle-solving of a game like Sokobond. It's true not just about their game that unlocks the wonder of chemistry, but about many other games that often get children doing science without even realising it. That quote from the creators of Happy Atoms inspired this list of games. Knowledge of chemistry or other sciences is necessary to solve many real-world problems, but the way it's taught now often fails to capture students’ imaginations, discouraging experimentation and discovery." "Science is an incredibly important subject that many students never fully grasp. Physics, Chemistry and Biology is something for the nerds, geeks and highly intelligent children at school and not for us or our children. Science can be a subject that many of us see as something for other people. Whether it’s collaborating to identify and store stock in Wilmot’s Warehouse or getting the furniture into the van neatly in Moving Out, how we work together and treat the people around us is important. Then there are games that make us aware of our co-workers. Like the game Good Job encourages us to do. This might be conversations with customers, but also the other people we work with in the office or workplace we find ourselves in. Other games, like Coffee Talk and Neo Cab help us consider the people we serve at work. Trying to manage crunch time with Going Under, or not succumbing to Tom Nook’s invitation for ever bigger mortgages in Animal Crossing, there are lots of games that can help us find some balance. Whether it’s escaping for a lunchtime walk with A Short Hike. Some address the world of work directly, while others enable us to consider our choices about how we spend our working hours. As a result of the devastating war between the United Earth Coalition (OCM) and the Asia-Pacific Union, the planet Earth has become almost an uninhabited wasteland. Going to have hours of fun with friends commanding our carrier.OS: Windows® Vista / Windows® 7 / Windows® 8įrom the creators of the series of tactical military shooters Arma in the light came a new generation of the famous game of the 80's. Even if the game stayed at it’s current state, I would be happy with the purchase. The AI pathfinding is frustrating sometimes, but the rest of the game overshadows its flaws. Played both solo and with a squad and I will tell you that multiplayer is significantly better. I’ve had a blast with this game the last 2 days. This might be one of the best coop capital ship piloting games ever. 2 players is great compared to soloing, but 4-6 is optimal. There’s plenty of war waging work to go around, and so I recommend playing it with others if you can. You can solo this game, but the best thing about this game is that it’s fully multiplayer compatible, you can share the bridge with others. I learned how to cue up multiple air attacks by placing several waypoints ahead, and that was a game changer. The most effective way to take them down seems to be strafing runs or swarming them with my own amphibious units. For example, if up against an amphibious unit in the water, the main cannon won’t hit, and cruise missiles are too expensive (the splash damage might roll right over it anyway). I’m still learning even after 13 hours of play, figuring out which weapons and vehicles are effective against which kind of threat. Most of what you learn will be through practice. It’s not quite “Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes” style, as the in-game manual is too terse for that, but there’s just enough breadcrumbs to follow. Personally, I was able to muddle through and had a pretty good idea what everything did within a couple hours. As others have mentioned, the learning curve is a bit sharpish. At times, you command other vehicles from the three remote control stations. A lot of times I thought to myself, “Wow, that reminds me of vehicular war footage I’ve seen on the news, so that’s what I was looking at.” You command this futuristic autonomous carrier from a bridge full of monitors, switches, and buttons. The entire suite of weapons taught me a lot about how naval combat is like today. (Much like Valheim, it makes good use of these graphics to produce immersive effects.) Realism manifests in things such as simulated weather, ocean currents, wind, ocean water deformation. No, they didn’t waste their time trying to make the graphics look photorealistic, in fact the whole engine has an ultra-efficient 1990s polygonal look. (There’s also a custom mode where you can change things like the number of islands, put you against multiple other carriers, or even PvP.) Carrier Command 2 departs from the original by increasing the realism. Like the original, the goal is to sink the other carrier which is doing the same. Each island specializes in a kind of production, and so there’s a logistics game attached to outfitting your units and keeping your supplies going. Perhaps the most faithful successor to the original Carrier Command, in this game you command a carrier (as the title suggests) in order to take over a number of islands. Carrier Command is an ’80s strategy classic well known for its unique blend of strategy and vehicle simulation. On top of that, get into each and every vehicle and take part in the action. Make the most of different unit types synergies and create combined arms assaults to efficiently win battles. Ensuring these supply lines remain open will be key to your survival. Once you have taken an island you will need to exploit and defend the resources it provides. The approach you take to a situation will play a big part in the outcome. Strategize, Gather intel from your vehicles’ radars, pick your tools of the trade, and launch your attacks where the enemy presence is thinner. Get in the shoes of an admiral and lead from the front. Command and Control, Take command of a carrier and operate its systems to launch your offensive and conquer the Archipelago. Military strategy in the 19th century was still viewed as one of a trivium of "arts" or "sciences" that govern the conduct of warfare the others being tactics, the execution of plans and maneuvering of forces in battle, and logistics, the maintenance of an army. Put more shortly: strategy is the art of the conduct of war, tactics the art of fighting." Background Tactics means the dispositions for, and control of, military forces and techniques in actual fighting. Field Marshal Viscount Alanbrooke, Chief of the Imperial General Staff and co-chairman of the Anglo-US Combined Chiefs of Staff Committee for most of the Second World War, described the art of military strategy as: "to derive from the aim a series of military objectives to be achieved: to assess these objectives as to the military requirements they create, and the pre-conditions which the achievement of each is likely to necessitate: to measure available and potential resources against the requirements and to chart from this process a coherent pattern of priorities and a rational course of action." Field-Marshal Montgomery summed it up thus "Strategy is the art of distributing and applying military means, such as armed forces and supplies, to fulfil the ends of policy. Strategy may be divided into 'grand strategy', geopolitical in scope and 'military strategy' that converts the geopolitical policy objectives into militarily achievable goals and campaigns. NATO's definition of strategy is "presenting the manner in which military power should be developed and applied to achieve national objectives or those of a group of nations. Military strategy involves using military resources such as people, equipment, and information against the opponent's resources to gain supremacy or reduce the opponent's will to fight, developed through the precepts of military science. It is larger in perspective than military tactics, which involves the disposition and maneuver of units on a particular sea or battlefield, but less broad than grand strategy otherwise called national strategy, which is the overarching strategy of the largest of organizations such as the nation state, confederation, or international alliance and involves using diplomatic, informational, military and economic resources. Strategy, which is a subdiscipline of warfare and of foreign policy, is a principal tool to secure national interests. Military strategy is the planning and execution of the contest between groups of armed adversaries. Tactics is the art of organizing forces on or near the battlefield to secure objectives as part of the broader military strategy. Strategy differs from tactics, in that strategy refers to the employment of all of a nation's military capabilities through high level and long term planning, development, and procurement to guarantee security or victory. Chanakya's Arthashastra has been an important strategic and political compendium in Indian and Asian history as well. The Eastern military strategy differs from the Western by focusing more on asymmetric warfare and deception. It continues to influence many competitive endeavors in Asia, Europe, and America including culture, politics, and business, as well as modern warfare. The Art of War by Sun Tzu grew in popularity and saw practical use in Western society as well. Sun Tzu (544–496 BC) is often considered as the father of Eastern military strategy and greatly influenced Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese historical and modern war tactics. Hence, both gave the pre-eminence to political aims over military goals. Liddell Hart's definition put less emphasis on battles, defining strategy as "the art of distributing and applying military means to fulfill the ends of policy". The father of Western modern strategic studies, Carl von Clausewitz (1780–1831), defined military strategy as "the employment of battles to gain the end of war." B. Military strategy deals with the planning and conduct of campaigns, the movement and disposition of forces, and the deception of the enemy. Derived from the Greek word strategos, the term strategy, when it appeared in use during the 18th century, was seen in its narrow sense as the "art of the general", or "'the art of arrangement" of troops. Military strategy is a set of ideas implemented by military organizations to pursue desired strategic goals. |
